About

Adinath Temple is an ancient Hindu temple sitting on top of Mainak Hill on Maheshkhali Island, just 12 km from Cox's Bazar.

Believed to be over 1,000 years old, this temple is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus in Bangladesh.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as "Adinath" (meaning "the first lord").

The Legend of Five Temples

According to an old legend, King Nasmasish of Nepal had a divine dream about Lord Shiva.

After this dream, he built five Shiva temples at five corners of the Indian subcontinent:

•Bishwanath in Kashi (Uttar Pradesh, India)

•Bhuthnath in Pakistan

•Adinath in Maheshkhali, Bangladesh

The Temple Structure

The main temple is 6 meters high and measures about 10.5 by 9.75 meters.

The inner walls are over a meter thick, showing the solid construction of ancient times.

The temple sits at the summit of Mainak Hill, and reaching it requires climbing over 200 steps.

Why It Matters

The temple is sacred to both Hindus and Jains.

For Jains, Adinath is the name of the first Tirthankara (spiritual teacher), making this site significant to them as well.

Every year during Shiva Chaturdashi festival, thousands of pilgrims climb the hill to offer prayers and seek blessings.

How to Reach

Step 1: Get to Maheshkhali Island

First, you need to reach Maheshkhali Island:

•Go to Kasturi Ghat in Cox's Bazar (CNG from town: 50-150 BDT)
