Bikrampur Buddhist Vihara is one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Bangladesh in recent decades.
Located in the village of Nateshwar in Munshiganj's Tongibari upazila, this site contains the remains of a Buddhist city and temple complex that is over 1,100 years old — a find that has rewritten our understanding of ancient Bengal's Buddhist heritage.
The story of this discovery began in 2010, when the Agrasar Bikrampur Foundation and the Archaeology Department of Jahangirnagar University started surveying the Bikrampur region.

Over 100 Buddhist statues, sculptures, copper plates, and thousands of pottery fragments have been recovered.
Carbon-14 testing at laboratories in the United States confirmed that the site is more than 1,100 years old, dating back to the 9th-10th century.
Historians believe these ruins are part of the ancient city of Vikrampur, which was once the capital of the Chandra and Varman dynasties and a major center of Buddhist learning.
This is the same region where Atish Dipankar, the legendary Buddhist scholar who reformed Tibetan Buddhism, was born in 980 AD.
The archaeological evidence confirms that Vikrampur was indeed a thriving Buddhist city during his lifetime, with monasteries, temples, and educational institutions that attracted scholars from across Asia.
The site is still being actively excavated, and new discoveries continue to emerge.
There are strong efforts to have the site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
